It turns your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man into a threat and a menace. If that sounds like the plot of a Curious George story, then you have the general idea of this film’s fatal flaw. But it’s okay, because he gets the deli owner out before the place burns down. The film singlehandedly kicked off a wave of reboots, just as I feared it would when it was announced back in 2010.ĭespite being introduced in Captain America: Civil War as capable of holding his own against the Avengers, Tom Holland’s Peter Parker is portrayed here as a total incompetent, the kind of guy who can’t thwart an ATM robbery without blowing up a nearby convenience store. Sure, it’s well-acted (Andrew Garfield differentiates himself from Toby Maguire while Emma Stone elevates an underwritten romantic subplot), but it’s a rehash of the other Spider-Man origin story, uglier and less narratively focused to boot, being sold as something new and superior. All it added was unnecessary details about Peter’s dead parents that implied that Peter’s transformation was not a random accident but an appointment with destiny.
This “new” movie copied the same plot details (right down to the “regular New Yorkers rally to save Spidey” bit) and same emotional climax (Peter is guilt-ridden over an accidental death and turns away the girl who loves him) from the 2002 blockbuster. It was a lie, one that the media fell for so they could write about how this new superhero movie had some vague connection to Twilight. Sony and friends successfully sold the lie that this Spider-Man origin story was totally different than the last one. We got a full-on origin story, a focus on quirky romance, and a scientist villain who acted as a surrogate father to the emerging superhero. The Marc Web-directed reboot also ended up being a carbon-copy remake of Sam Raimi’s original Spider-Man. But this ill-advised reboot, coming off the most successful Spider-Man movie of all time ended up being a conventional superhero blockbuster movie.
This was intended to be a small-scale, romance-focused Peter Parker drama in contrast to the bombastic (and expensive) Spider-Man 3.
